As the popularity of AI continues to surge, more companies are looking to bring what would normally target desktop devices to mobile-ready processors. Thanks to the custom design and advanced process node of the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 series, users may soon find that AI is more commonplace.

Qualcomm's improvements to its newest mobile processor lineup can be categorized into traditional and AI upgrades. The traditional upgrades include standard smartphone features, such as cameras, image processing, general processing, and wireless connectivity. AI upgrades include on-device AI acceleration for generative AI or other new features that require AI processing.

Efficiently Accelerating Smartphone AI

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 unites the Kryo CPU, Adreno GPU, and Hexagon NPU to deliver a versatile, low-latency AI experience. Compared to previous generations, the overall AI engine reportedly delivers a 30% improvement in AI processing. Within the NPU, Qualcomm supports AI and tensor acceleration, vector extensions, and a wide range of precision support. Both hardware and software designers can use this support to improve performance in image editing, gaming, video/audio immersion, and beyond.

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 also improves general processing efficiency, with a reported 20% CPU uplift, 40% GPU uplift, and a 12% total power savings. As a result, users can use their devices longer, even when leveraging the most advanced features. The platform employs Qualcomm’s Triple ISP to improve sound quality and image capture, supporting up to three cameras with three parallel processing chains.

Building Out the Snapdragon Portfolio

While the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 platform may not be appropriate for entry-level phones, the new features and performance specs build momentum to Qualcomm’s other recent mobile announcements, including the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 platform, which brings 5G data, fast charging, and higher memory performance to low-cost phones.
