TVS - Thyristors

Category Introduction

Thyristor-based Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) devices are over-voltage protection devices that approximate an open circuit under normal operating conditions. Application of a voltage across them in excess of some specific value called the breakover voltage causes them to enter a conductive state approximating a short circuit. This state persists until current flow through the device is reduced below a minimum value called "hold current" by some outside influence within the circuit.

About TVS Thyristor

What are TVS Thyristor?

TVS Thyristor

TVS Thyristors, or Transient Voltage Suppressor Thyristors, are semiconductor devices designed to protect electronic circuits from voltage spikes and transients. These devices operate by clamping excessive voltage and diverting the surge current away from sensitive components, thus preventing damage. TVS Thyristors are triggered into a low-resistance state when a transient voltage exceeds a certain threshold, allowing them to absorb and dissipate the energy of the surge. Once the transient subsides, they return to their high-resistance state, ready to protect against future surges.

Types of TVS Thyristor

Unidirectional TVS Thyristors

Unidirectional TVS Thyristors are designed to protect circuits from positive voltage transients. They are typically used in DC applications where the voltage polarity does not change. These devices are characterized by their ability to handle high surge currents and are often employed in power supply lines and DC motor controls.

Bidirectional TVS Thyristors

Bidirectional TVS Thyristors can handle both positive and negative voltage transients, making them suitable for AC applications where voltage polarity can reverse. These devices are ideal for protecting AC power lines, communication lines, and other circuits exposed to alternating current environments.

Low Capacitance TVS Thyristors

Low capacitance TVS Thyristors are specifically designed for high-speed data lines and RF applications where minimal signal distortion is crucial. They offer protection without significantly affecting the signal integrity, making them suitable for protecting HDMI, USB, and other high-frequency interfaces.

How to choose TVS Thyristor?

When selecting a TVS Thyristor, several key parameters must be considered:

  • Clamping Voltage: Ensure the clamping voltage is below the maximum voltage rating of the protected circuit.
  • Peak Pulse Current: Choose a device that can handle the expected surge current.
  • Breakdown Voltage: The breakdown voltage should be slightly above the normal operating voltage of the circuit.
  • Capacitance: For high-speed applications, select a low-capacitance TVS Thyristor to minimize signal distortion.

Evaluate product quality by reviewing supplier certifications, reliability testing results, and customer reviews. Consider environmental factors such as temperature range and humidity, and ensure the device is compatible with the installation requirements of your specific application.

Applications of TVS Thyristor

Telecommunications

In the telecommunications industry, TVS Thyristors protect sensitive communication equipment from lightning-induced surges and electrostatic discharge (ESD). They are used in base stations, routers, and network switches to ensure uninterrupted service and data integrity.

Automotive

Automotive applications utilize TVS Thyristors to safeguard electronic control units (ECUs), infotainment systems, and sensor interfaces from voltage spikes caused by load dumps and inductive loads. These devices help maintain vehicle safety and performance.

Consumer Electronics

TVS Thyristors are employed in consumer electronics to protect devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops from ESD and power surges. They ensure the longevity and reliability of these gadgets by preventing damage to internal components.

Industrial Equipment

In industrial settings, TVS Thyristors protect machinery and control systems from voltage transients caused by switching operations and lightning strikes. They are crucial in maintaining operational efficiency and reducing downtime.

Renewable Energy

Renewable energy systems, such as solar and wind power installations, use TVS Thyristors to protect inverters and power converters from voltage surges. This protection is vital for ensuring the stability and efficiency of energy conversion processes.
