Infineon Spins Full-Bridge ICs for Smart Brushed DC Motor Designs

Infineon Technologies has recently announced its new portfolio of full-bridge/H-bridge ICs for brushed DC motor applications. Infineon says that the MOTIX Bridge BTM90xx family complements its MOTIX low-voltage motor control IC portfolio.

Infineon designed these ICs for tiny motor controls in automotive applications. This includes applications in door, mirror, seat, body, and zone control modules. They can also be used in automotive DC motors or inductive/resistive loads.

Space-Saving ICs With New Automotive Features

The BTM90xx family operates at a supply voltage of 7 V to 18 V and can handle voltage transients from 4.5 V to 40 V. They are rated for PWM operations up to 20 kHz.

Infineon claims that the cost-optimized BTM90xx family features new functionalities for intelligent motor control solutions, including protective and diagnostic functions onboard. Safety features include overtemperature, undervoltage, overcurrent, cross-current, and short-circuit detection. Current sensing with error flagging is also available on both the high and low side of the gate drivers. The ICs come with adjustable slew rates.

The devices are AEC-Q100 qualified and ISO-26262-ready and come in a tiny TSDSO-14 4.9 mm x 6.0 mm package, among the smallest packages in Infineon’s portfolios. The small packaging means it can fit in space-constrained applications and reduce PCB sizes. Infineon also claims the BTM90xx family has improved thermal performance due to its 11 mm2 exposed pads.

Versatile Variants for Cost-Optimized Uses

The BTM90xx family comes in variants for different design applications. Designers can choose between a minimum current limit of 10 A with the BTM901x or 20 A with the BTM902x. Both options come with SPI variants. The SPI variants BTM9011EP and BTM9021EP support daisy chaining and allow designers to reduce system costs. The BTM9021EP additionally features an internal watchdog.

Infineon provides a number of support resources for the family, including evaluation boards, power dissipation calculators, and Arduino example codes. The MOTIX BTM90xx also comes with device drivers and MOTIX Configuration Wizard for system designers to use.
