D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings

Category Introduction

Products in this family are components of D-subminiature style connectors, into which electrical contacts that have been applied to discrete wires can be inserted. So-named in reference to the shape of their mating end and their relatively high interconnect density at the time of introduction, an additional component known as a backshell is needed to form a connector assembly. Note that similar products assembled by means of soldering discrete wires in place are available though grouped separately, alongside similar items intended for mounting directly to a printed circuit board.

About D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings

What are D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings?

D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings

D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings are essential components in the realm of electrical connectors, designed to encase and protect the connection interface of D-Sub connectors. These housings provide a robust mechanical structure that ensures the secure alignment and retention of the connector pins, facilitating reliable electrical connections. Typically, they are characterized by their D-shaped metal shell, which not only offers mechanical protection but also shields against electromagnetic interference (EMI). The operating principle involves the housing securing the connector's pins in place, ensuring a stable and consistent connection between devices.

Types of D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings

Standard D-Sub Housings

Standard D-Sub housings are the most common type, used for general-purpose applications. They are available in various sizes, such as 9-pin, 15-pin, 25-pin, and more, to accommodate different connector configurations. These housings are typically made from metal or high-grade plastic, offering a balance between durability and cost-effectiveness.

High-Density D-Sub Housings

High-density D-Sub housings are designed to accommodate a greater number of pins within the same physical space as standard housings. This makes them ideal for applications where space is limited but high connectivity is required. They are often used in telecommunications and data networking equipment.

Waterproof D-Sub Housings

Waterproof D-Sub housings are engineered to provide protection against moisture and environmental contaminants. These housings are sealed with gaskets and other protective features, making them suitable for outdoor or harsh environment applications, such as in marine or industrial settings.

Filtered D-Sub Housings

Filtered D-Sub housings incorporate EMI/RFI filters to reduce electromagnetic interference. These are crucial in applications where signal integrity is paramount, such as in medical devices and sensitive electronic equipment.

How to choose D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings?

When selecting D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings, consider the following key parameters:

  • Pin Configuration: Determine the number of pins required for your application and choose a housing that accommodates this configuration.
  • Material: Select between metal or plastic housings based on durability requirements and environmental exposure.
  • Environmental Protection: For outdoor or harsh environments, opt for waterproof or sealed housings.
  • EMI/RFI Shielding: If signal integrity is a concern, consider filtered housings.
  • Size and Space Constraints: Evaluate the physical space available and choose standard or high-density housings accordingly.

To evaluate product quality and reliability, review supplier certifications, customer reviews, and product testing standards. Consider environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and potential exposure to chemicals when selecting housings. Installation requirements, such as ease of assembly and compatibility with existing systems, should also be assessed.

Applications of D-Sub, D-Shaped Connectors - Housings

Telecommunications

In telecommunications, D-Sub housings are used to connect network equipment, ensuring stable data transmission. Their high-density configurations are particularly beneficial in space-constrained environments like server rooms.

Industrial Automation

Industrial automation systems rely on D-Sub housings for connecting various control devices and sensors. The robust construction of these housings ensures reliable performance in demanding industrial settings.

Computing and IT

In computing and IT, D-Sub housings are employed in connecting peripherals such as monitors and printers. Their standardized design facilitates easy integration and replacement.

Medical Equipment

Medical devices utilize D-Sub housings for secure and interference-free connections. Filtered housings are often preferred to maintain signal integrity in sensitive medical applications.

Automotive Electronics

In automotive electronics, D-Sub housings are used for connecting diagnostic equipment and control modules. Waterproof housings are particularly useful in vehicles exposed to varying environmental conditions.
