Overview
The STUSBCD01B is a USB charger detection IC designed by STMicroelectronics. This device is capable of detecting dedicated USB chargers, Host/Hub chargers, or standard host ports connected to the USB DP/DM data lines. It implements two different detection methods to distinguish between dedicated chargers and Host/Hub chargers. The operation is controlled through three general-purpose I/O pins, and a hardware open drain detection output is also available. An internal regulator provides a 1.8 V supply voltage for the internal blocks and state machine, while a clamping device prevents the VBUS voltage from exceeding 6 V.

Q & A
- What is the primary function of the STUSBCD01B?
The STUSBCD01B is a USB charger detection IC that detects dedicated USB chargers, Host/Hub chargers, or standard host ports connected to the USB DP/DM data lines.
- What are the two detection methods used by the STUSBCD01B?
The device uses a current source/sink method for dedicated chargers and a current sink method for Host/Hub chargers.
- What is the voltage range for the VBAT supply?
The VBAT supply voltage ranges from 2.2 V to 4.5 V.
- What is the purpose of the VBUS clamping circuit?
The VBUS clamping circuit prevents the VBUS voltage from exceeding 6 V, providing over-voltage protection.
- How is the detection output signaled?
The detection output is signaled through an open drain pin (DETECT) and a digital I/O pin (STATUS/METHOD).
- What is the package type and dimensions of the STUSBCD01B?
The STUSBCD01B is available in a 12 bumps Flip-Chip package, 1.6 x 1.2 mm, pitch 0.4 mm, max thickness 0.60 mm.
- What are the ESD protection specifications for the STUSBCD01B?
The device has ESD protection of HBM ± 2 kV and CDM 500 V on every pin.
- How does the internal regulator function?
The internal regulator provides a 1.8 V supply voltage for the internal blocks and state machine and does not require any bypass capacitor for stability.
- What are the typical applications for the STUSBCD01B?
The typical applications include mobile phones, PDAs, MP3 players, and any USB platform requiring charger detection functionality.
- How is the detection triggered and terminated?
Detection is triggered when the VBUS voltage exceeds the VTH_VBUS threshold and the shutdown input is low. It is terminated when the VBUS voltage drops below the VTH_VBUS threshold or the shutdown input is pulled high.
